Springway Construction Update & What’s Next

The new boardwalk over Orkin Lake under construction.

The first section of Sandy Springs’ new trail network, the Springway, is under construction and making progress around Orkin Lake near the Chattahoochee River and Morgan Falls Dam. Construction by the city has been slowed due to rain and other environmental issues and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The 1.6-mile segment connects Morgan Falls Overlook Park to Orkin Lake to Roswell Rd at Cimarron Pkwy.  This first segment is part of a 5- mile loop. The next section of the 5-mile loop is awaiting funding for construction. The Springway city trail plan includes about 30 miles of connecting paved pedestrian and bicycle paths throughout the city.

Initially called the Sandy Springs Master Trail Plan, the Springway outlines a total of 31 miles of trails and the city committed to building 10 miles of it in the first 10 years. SSC was a driving force in the creation of the plan, contributing $25,000 to the plan development. In 2019 a trail master plan committee was formed that included representatives from SSC, PATH and city staff. The plan was completed and adopted by the city in the fall of 2019. The Sandy Springs Conservancy provided $30,000 to the city of Sandy Springs in support of the city’s application for a $3M grant from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program for construction of the first segment.
