The Sandy Springs Conservancy’s next monthly Trail Blazers guided walk takes us to Powers Island on Saturday, May 13 at 8:30 am! Join us as SSC board chairman Jack Misiura guides us through the rugged riverside trails of the Powers Island Trail.

Powers Island is part of the Cochrane Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNA). The island’s name shares roots with nearby Powers Ferry Road, named for James Powers who operated a ferry from the island during the early 1800s, providing access across river.

The Powers Island Trail is one of the most serene sections of the recreation area and is lesser-traveled than the more popular part of Cochrane Shoals across the river in Cobb County. The trail explores an island, an inlet, and the banks of the shoaling Chattahoochee River. The trail also includes a loop with a moderate incline that climbs through dense forest to explore a portion of a ridge. The full trail is a 2.5-miles.

Our Trail Blazers walk will take us on a shorter walk exploring the island and along the riverbank. The trail offers views of the river and goes through a forest studded with large rock outcrops and old stacked-stone walls. The dirt-path trail is narrow and can be muddy in places. Good hiking or walking shoes that can get dirty are recommended. A $5 CRNRA Daily Pass is required.

SSC Trail Blazers walks take about an hour. Walks are limited to 25 participants and registration is required.

Trail Blazers events will be scheduled for the second Saturday of each month.

Participants will meet at the scheduled park or trailhead location.  The minimum age to participate is 10 years old, and anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must register and sign a liability waiver online. Registration is first come first served.  You will be contacted for cancellation/rescheduling in the case of inclement weather.
